History of the Honda Brio in Indonesia

rubiconraceteam – The Honda Brio’s journey in Indonesia is very interesting. The first generation Brio was launched in Indonesia in 2012, and the car succeeded in winning the title of Indonesia’s best-selling car in 2020 and 2022.

One of the reasons for Brio’s popularity is its compact size. This makes this city car very suitable for use in the city. Efficient because it consumes good fuel. The design is stylish and suits the style of young people.

Apart from that, the Honda Brio comes in RS and Satya variants. Meanwhile, the Brio Satya occupies the low cost green car (LCGC) segment with a price tag of under IDR 200 million. This car competes with the Toyota Agya E and G variants and the Daihatsu Ayla. Looking back a little, the story of the Honda Brio Gen 1 initially entered Indonesia in full assembly (CBU) status or when it was imported from Thailand in 2012. A year later, local assembly of the Brio, known as Complete Knockdown (CKD), began in Indonesia with a number of changes.

At that time, Honda Prospect Motor (HPM) finally completely overhauled its city car in 2018, resulting in the Brio Gen 2 which was bigger than the old Brio. In 2023, the H manufacturer made slight changes to its small car.

The reasons are various, including its compact body size, entry into the city car segment and being suitable for use in urban areas, as well as its stylish and sporty exterior design which is aimed at young people. A car that continues to be loved by many people to this day. How is this city car run in Indonesia? See more about the Honda Brio on TREVOMOTIF this week!

History of the Honda Brio in Indonesia
Honda Brio was launched in 2012

The Honda Brio was first launched in Indonesia in August 2012. Originally this first generation was imported from Thailand in CBU form or complete assembly with only a 1,300cc engine. The name Brio comes from Italian which means happy and enthusiastic.

Visually, this first generation resembles a city car and has a cheerful appearance. A year later, precisely in August 2013, local assembly of the Brio began in Indonesia and the Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) version, the Brio Satya, was introduced with a 1,200 cc engine. The name Sathya comes from Sanskrit which means sincere or loyal. Its characteristic can be recognized from the jasmine flower plate on the back. Meanwhile, the Thai Brio, which was equipped with a 1.3 liter engine, changed its name to Brio Sport, but its production was finally discontinued by Honda in December 2013.

Brio facelift after 4 years
Four years have passed since the Honda Brio first arrived in Indonesia, now the powerful city car has received a refresh on the front. With an increasingly aggressive bumper and an elongated grille, the Brio’s appearance is increasingly sporty and suitable for the Indonesian market.

Apart from that, the euthanized Brio Sport is now a Brio RS which uses an L12B or 1.2 liter engine. Refreshments were also made to the car, apparently Honda made improvements based on input from Indonesian citizens.

Second generation Brio Bone
In 2018, six years after the birth of the Brio and two years after refreshing the first generation Brio, Honda finally updated its city car. It’s fresher, better adapted to the market, and slightly larger than its predecessor.

Yes, the bumper is the same as the previous model, but now it looks much sportier, with sharper headlights and a honeycomb in the grille to add to the sporty look.

The rear has also been changed from classic to sporty, with significant changes to the brake lights and the use of a diffuser-shaped rear bumper making the rear even sportier and suitable for young Indonesians. There are also some changes in size: the first generation Brio is 3,610 mm long, 1,680 mm wide and 1,470 mm high, but the second generation is slightly longer at 3,815 mm, and the same width, 1,680 mm, but taller at just under 1,485 mm. .

Unfortunately, there are no major changes in this second generation. This seems to be thanks to Honda’s improvements to the first generation refresh.

Brio Urbanite is getting sportier
To boost sales and strengthen the sporty impression of the Brio, Honda is launching the Brio Urbanite in 2021 and 2022, targeting young people with an increasingly sporty appearance.

Actually, there are not many changes made to the Brio, only changes in appearance. Brio RS is equipped with a body kit and rear spoiler on several parts of the car. The rest remains the same without any changes.

Five years later: Brio Gen 2 facelift
The existence of the Brio Urbanite still seems unsatisfactory for Honda, and five years after the launch of the second generation, Honda has implemented a refresh or facelift. A modern touch is given to the exterior and interior of H Upright Factory’s flagship city car.

The exterior follows Honda’s current design language of larger grilles, with most models sporting larger, wider grilles. Another change was made to the RS lighting system, now using LEDs.

Inside, the Satya gets digital AC, the RS gets a 7-inch head unit, digital integrated instrument panel, keyless start/stop button and other important details have been implemented.

So far, Brio is still a favorite among young people and continues to adapt to the trend of sporty and compact cars that make it easier to get around the city.
